A famine emigrant from the Tuam area Dick Dowling became a publican in Houston, Texas, and a lieutenant in the confederate army. In charge of an artillery battery he successfully defeated a superior force of the union army in the naval battle of Sabine Pass. A monument to his memory can be seen in Hermann park , Houston, Texas.

The Ard Ri House Hotel is conveniently located with Galway Airport and Galway City only 30 minutes distant while Ireland West ( Knock ) airport is 50 minutes away on the N17 to Sligo. A regular coach service is available to all main destinations from Bus Eireann.

It sits on a large 3 1/2 acre site inside the limits of the town on the left hand side as your leave the town and is bordered by a grove of mature evergreen trees.
